She is among most recognizable people across the world, who’s known for her generosity and infectious personality as much as for her multi-billion dollar career.

But a recent health scare has given the so called Queen of All Media a new perspective – and respect – for her body.

‘I was grateful… our bodies are amazing. And too often we are not grateful for their perfect functioning,’ the 64-year old revealed in an essay posted in the November issue of O, The Oprah Magazine.

This all started when the media mogul noticed her neck was swollen while cooking some breakfast one morning.

‘By the time I finished making breakfast, the swelling had increased,’ she wrote with a sense of worry.

‘I immediately Googled ‘swollen lymph gland causes,’ she said. ‘None of the results was good.’

Wasting little time, Oprah made an appointment with a doctor, but the four hour wait would be excruciating for her.

She would go on to think the worst as she tried to diagnose her symptoms and remember everything she had eaten.

In the end, all the worry was wasted energy. Her doctor found out that her salivary glands were blocked and prescribed an easy remedy of drinking water and sucking on lemons.

A gallon of water and several lemon slices later, the blockage cleared and her neck was back to normal in two days time.

‘I couldn’t believe it. I’d worked myself up to a blood pressure reading of 150/80 thinking about how I was going to rearrange my life to deal with whatever this was.’

‘As they say, you don’t appreciate your health until you no longer have it,’ she wrote. ‘Before this scare, I’d taken my salivary glands for granted. Actually, I’m pretty sure I’d never thought of them at all.’

In fact, the experience reminded her that we should all be grateful for the human body’s ability for ‘perfect functioning, balancing bacteria and enzymes, managing blood flow, thrumming the sinus rhythm beat, beat, beat of our hearts day in, day out.’

She ended her essay by suggesting people to ‘look no further than your own body to offer a prayer of thanksgiving’ this Thanksgiving.
